It’s not like any other wedding from other parts of India where you have avenues for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. Tamil Matrimony is a very religious and ritual-driven affair, steeped in pious customs and steady performance for the same. Any slack or tampering there would hamper the sanctity of the wedding altogether. Lastly, you need to know that it’s not all pomp and show in these weddings.

Breakfast

After a cup of coffee early in the morning, you have breakfast at 7.30 am. The menu contains Kesari or Halwa, Seeuym, Pineapple pudding, Pongal/Venpongal, Idli, Sambar and Ulundha Vadai. There is a host, typically a south Indian delicacy like Thengai Thuvaiyal or coconut chutney, Chili chutney or Milagai, milakai Podi with seasame oil, Gingelly, tea or coffee. The food is served on a plantain leaf or banana leaf piece. That’s the traditional and style.

Lunch

Next, it’s time for lunch. It starts with Rice, dal with ghee or Paruppu with nei, Sambar, Vaththa Kuzhambu, vatral kulambu, Biryani, Paruppu urundai kulambu, Rasam and mixed vegetable kuruma. There’s a wide variety of food items in this course. You also have curd, soup, butermilk, pakoda, appalam or papadm pickle or achar, amavadai or Dal vada, masal vada, payasam or pudding and jilebi. Then you’ve Avial, therakkal, poriyal, Usili, Masiyal, Potato Masaalm varuvaal or roast followed by curd’s weet pachadi and parangikai. Then you have beeda and pan. The food is served on a big piece of plantain leaf. It’s called Vaalai ilai.

Dinner

on many occasions, people settle for lesser items for dinner. There is puri, chapathi, purotta, roti, mixed vegetable kuruma, raitha, pulav, idli, chutney, Sambar, masala milk, halwa and ice cream.

The grander ones: There are different types of dinner menu. One of them would contain fruit punch, fresh juice, badam milk. Then there are hot jelabi, carrot halwa and rasamalai followed by sambar vada or rasa vada. You have dosa varieties, kara chutney, idiyappam, coconut milk or kurma, pulav and veg biriyani. It’s followed by onion/cucumber raitha, bisibelabath, potato or banana chips, white rice, rasam, tendly or aloo fry as varuval and sweet pachadi. There’s curd rice, cut fruit, lime or mange pickle and beeda. End that with ice cream.
